All of us have grown up playing with building blocks and so has my little girl. In-fact, she still does so and incidentally she loves Lego more than her dolls. So on her 7th birthday when she asked us for a trip to Legoland, as a birthday gift we were more than thrilled. We had never been to Legoland before and wondered how fascinating an amusement park featuring only Lego can be? We got our answer the minute we reached there. It is a treasure trove of attractions and rides. It was so much fun that we had to change our one-day pass into a two-day pass. Why Visit Legoland Malaysia

Legoland Malaysia is Asia’s First Legoland Park and also Malaysia’s first International theme park. It is a perfect for family outings. The rides and attractions are fun for kids and adults equally. The 4D shows are exciting too. This park has the World’s first Lego themed virtual reality based roller coaster. Miniland is like visiting all the attractions of Asia in one place. Of course, the miniature Lego replicas but nevertheless, it is fascinating.

Legoland Malaysia

If you have visited Disneyland or Universal Studios, this park is also built on similar lines with segments consisting of different attractions. But the difference is that it all involves Lego. So you have characters, castles, kingdoms, spacecrafts (in fact, a whole galactic universe) and a mini-land made only out of Lego. I loved to see Lego characters, people, animals, dragons, vehicles at very nook and corner of the park. The main characters dressed in costumes parade the park at particular timings for a meet and greet session. What I loved the best is, there were small stations with Lego at every attraction entry. Which means you can build while waiting for your turn on the ride.

Legoland Theme Park

The Beginning

This is main entrance of Legoland, where you get the tickets. But we skipped this part and got our tickets online. As soon you clear the entrance you are welcomed by some costume characters. If you reach at Opening Time (10 am) you get to enjoy a small meet and greet session with the characters. The Lego characters Emmet and Lucy perform a short song and dance ritual.

The Beginning is where you will also find a Mini Market that sells everything you will need for visiting the park. Right from umbrellas, ponchos, caps, tees, to refreshments. The Big Shop is actually what the name suggests. It is the largest shop in Legoland selling Lego. The Brick Shop is next that has all the Lego accessories and merchandise on offer. You also have The Cafe for refreshments.

Lego Ninjago World

This theme is based on the fictional world of Ninjas. It is all about Asian culture, ancient villages, temples along with modern skyscrapers and state of the art weapons and vehicles. The main characters of Wu (Sensei) and the teenage Ninjas are found everywhere built from Lego.

Ninjago The Ride, is one of the main attractions of Legoland Malaysia. On this ride visitors turn into ninjas trying to defeat the enemy using elements of fire, ice, earth and lighting. The ride makes use of hand action sensors and is a 4D indoor ride.

The height and age requirements for this ride are 115 cm and 6 years unattended.

Sensei’s Shop is where you will find all the merchandise related to Ninjago.

Zane Temple Build is other attraction where you can help build the temple with Lego.

Imagination

This is fascinating for kids and adults too. There are many attractions here that are fun and engaging.

The Built and Test was surprisingly enticing for us. We loved making our own cars and testing them on the racing tracks. So much so that we lost track of time and reluctantly moved over to the other attractions. They even organize a competition wherein the kids compete with their built cars. My kid was so engrossed in doing so and was thrilled to win the competition.

Kids Power Town is an interactive ride that cooperatively works on pulley mechanism.

If you need a aerial view of the entire park then Observation Tower is the place to be. This ride takes you at a height which gives you an entire 360 degree view of Legoland. This was amazing. The height and age requirements for this ride are 120 cm and 6 years unattended.

I love 4 D movies and like all amusement park Legoland has its share too. Lego Studios showcases different shows every 30 minutes. We loved the chills and sprinklers that come with it.

Young kids can enjoy The DUPLO Express which is basically a toy train ride and The DUPLO Play-town, wherein they can build their own structures in a city modeled playground.

Lego Technic

This zone is more suitable for older kids. The Lego Academy conducts educational workshops.

Lego Mind-storms is  another interactive workshop that lets the kids dabble in robotics. There are different sessions according to the age group.

The Star Wars Miniland showcases the main scenes from the 6 Star Wars series. The replicas are well made and include over 2000 Lego Star Wars models. Some of them are working models too with sound and lightening effects. Apart from the models, main characters of Yoda, Darth Vader and Sith Lords are also made with Lego.

Aqua Zone Wave Racers is a fun ride for the whole family. Here you spin around in racers while trying not to get drenched. The height and age requirements for this ride are 120 cm and 8 years unattended.

The Great Lego Race is one of the most exciting and thrilling rides in Legoland. This ride uses virtual reality to create thrilling images while the roller coaster takes you through sudden turns and steep falls. It is not for the faint heart. The height and age requirements for this ride are 130 cm and 8 years unattended.

For young kids there is a highly advanced merry go round called Technic Twister. The height and age requirements for this ride are 120 cm and 6 years unattended.

Lego Kingdoms

Here you enter the world of brave knights, mighty castles and scary dragons. This was my kids favorite part of Legoland. This part is more suited for younger kids as there are many attractions for them. They can enjoy Merlin’s Challenge (A Carousel), The Horeman’s Hideout (A playground) and Royal Joust (A mechanized horse ride).

However the older kids and adults can enjoy The Dragon, another main attractions of Legoland. Mainly a roller-coaster that will definitely guarantee some thrills, shrills and shrieks. The height and age requirements for this ride are 120 cm and 8 years unattended.

If the above ride looks too daunting for younger kids, there is also a milder version called The Dragon’s Apprentice. The height and age requirements for this ride are 120 cm and 6 years unattended.

Land of Adventure

Land of Adventure has two sections. Dinosaurs and the Lost Kingdom. Both have one main ride.

The Dino Island is a thrilling ride that takes you through menacing dinosaurs and then lands into a splash of water. Be prepared to get drenched in this ride. Thanks to the tropical weather you get dry within minutes. The height and age requirements for this ride are 120 cm and 6 years unattended.

Lost Kingdom Adventure is another main attraction of Legoland. Here you go collecting treasure by laser blasting points in an ancient Egyptian setting. Interesting part about this ride is that there is a ranking system, which will be displayed along with your photo at the exit.

Beetle Bounce is a ride for young kids that takes them to a height of 15 meters. The height and age requirements for this ride are 105 cm and 5 years unattended.

Young kids also have an Egyptian themed indoor playground at Pharaoh’s Revenge. 

All the dinosaur and Egyptian theme memorabilia is available at Adventurer’s Depot.

Lego City

This segment is creative and engaging for kids. So make sure you have time to cover this.

The Driving School is a must visit for all kids. The kids are divided according to their age and are then trained on how to drive a car. The kids then take on a toy car complete with road signs and signals. Mine was thrilled to bits and did the ride three times. They even get their own Driving License.

Similarly, Boating School is another family favourite. It involves a navigating a battery operated boat. I personally loved this ride.

Lego City Airport is where the the kids get to soar their plane however high they want.

An interesting way to see all the major attractions of Legoland is on board the Legoland Express. It is fun for adults as well as the kids.

Rescue Academy is where the the family works together to power a fire truck and douse a building on fire.

The Shipyard is a soft  play area for young kids designed as a ship.

Miniland

This is a Lego wonderland. Right at the center of Legoland is Miniland that showcases main attractions of 17 Asian countries made using Lego. The most popular ones are the Petronas Twin Towers, Taj Mahal, Angkor Wat and Singapore’s Merlion. Some of the attractions are touch operated to experience the working, like the Port Tanjung Pelepas, which is Malaysia’s advanced container port. Miniland needs to be seen to believe how marvelous the replicas are.

Legoland Water Park

This is awesome fun and a great way to beat the heat. Its just like any other water park with the central theme being Lego.

Build A Raft is a lazy river where you get to build something with floating Lego blocks while floating on a floater. It is a fun activity if it is not too crowded and you get hold of a floater.

Brick Blaster, Lego Slide Racers Red Rush, Splash N Swirl, Tidal Tube, Twin Chasers and Wave Riders are different water slides offering thrills, shrills and lots of splashes.

Build A Boat is fun where you get to build and test your own boat with Lego. The testing river is 35 feet long complete with a dam that controls the water flow. My kid loved it and so did we.

Joker Soaker was our favorite. It had slides and splashes with a huge bucket of water pouring down at regular intervals. We spent maximum time here. In-fact my kid had to be literally carried away from here at closing time.

Lego Wave Pool is a pool where you can laze around in the gentle waves. The water is not too deep so the kids will love splashing around.

For young kids there is DUPLO Splash Safari which has a water playground and some DUPLO characters.

Surf Shop is where you get all the swimming essentials. From swimwear, sunglasses, hats to sun block lotions.

The Best Rides at Legoland

1. Technic Twister

This fun spinning ride is perfect for the whole family.

2. Driving School

The look on the faces of young kids after completing a successful driving session says it all.

3. Boating School

Learnt how to drive a car and then learn how to navigate a boat. The plus point of this ride is that adults can join in the fun too!

4. The Great Lego Race

A roller coaster with virtual reality! Definitely not for the faint hearted.

5. Dino Island

Roller coaster, dinosaurs and water splash need I say more!

6. Build A Boat

Building a boat with Lego and then testing it with other competitors is way too engrossing.

 7. Joker Soaker

An interactive water playground with different slides and a pool. It is every kids dream come true.

Eating at Legoland

King’s Grill

This is located in the Kingdom’s section. It mainly consists of grilled goodies along with lots of options in the kid’s menu. Asian and limited Indian cuisine is also available here.

Pizza Mania

Legoland sure knows how to make kids happy. Apart from the rides there is also Pizza!! This place is located in the Imagination zone.

Asian Deli

Located in the Lego Technic area, this is where you get all the South East Asian delights. There are some Indian Meals also available here.

Burger Junction

We loved the Burgers here so did my kid. There is a special menu for kids that comes with a drink and fries too. Its located in the Land of Adventure area.

Market Restaurant

You name the cuisine and its available here. From Asian, Indian, pasta to burger. Its located in the Lego City area.

Cool Hut

Roaming around the sun makes you thirsty so there are regular kiosk selling refreshments. If you need more options in drinks head to Cool Hut in the Lego Technic zone..

Beach Grill

This is right at the center of the Water World. Splashing around makes one hungry so this is a perfect place to grab some bites.

Brick Cafe

This is another eatery in the water world to satisfy your hunger pangs and quench your thirst.

Legoland Tickets and Passes

Beat the crowd at the ticket counter by booking your entry tickets Online. That too with discounts. We Got ours from Klook. You can choose your own package i.e. One day or Two day Combo Pass.

Malaysia HERO Access Pass and Meal Voucher. This pass offers fast track access for the top 7 rides and a meal voucher. It will save you waiting time at these popular rides.

In case you want to cover Legoland in one day go for the Malaysia VIP Expedition pass. This gives you priority access to all the rides in Legoland. Along with this you will also be first in line for photo ops with the characters. Plus you get to dine with a mascot.

Best Time to Go

Malaysia is a tropical country. The weather stays same all year round in Johor Bahru. It rains almost everyday but the drier months are June, July and August. The weather is relatively cooler from December to February. But this is also the time for tourists so expect a huge waiting line. Also, plan your visit on a weekday after checking the local holidays to get less crowd.

We unknowingly visited Legoland during the holy month of Ramadan. Which turned into a blessing! There were hardly any tourists around. We did not experience long waiting lines for any rides. We had taken an express line ticket but a normal ticket also would have worked.

Tips for Visiting Legoland

1. Beat the crowd at the ticket counter by booking your tickets Online. That too with discounts.
2. Reach at opening time and have the most of your 1 Day or 2 Day pass.
3. A day pass allows only one entry and exit. If you need to multiple entries go for a combo pass.
4. Outside food is not allowed. However carry your own water as the water inside is overpriced.
5. Carry an umbrella with you. It can rain anytime here.
6. When it rains the outdoor rides are closed so save time and head out to a closed attraction or 4D shows.
7. Maps are available at the entrance. Pick up one. It will help you save time and plan your day.
8. Prioritize your rides according to the zone and then come back later if you have time.
9. You do not need to lug around the stuff you buy at the stores here. You can collect them at the exit counter also.
10. In case you want more food options. Head out at the mall just opposite to the main entrance. It caters mainly to reasonably priced food with lots of varieties. But for this you need a combo pass so that you can re-enter.

How to Reach Legoland Malaysia

From Malaysia

Johor Bahru Airport is well connected to all major places in Malaysia. Legoland is on the outskirts of Johor Bahru. It takes around 40 minutes to reach.

From Singapore

Where To Stay

Amari, Johor Bahru

Johor Bahru is hardly any distance from Singapore so Legoland can be covered in one day. This can be daunting with young kids. However, we were travelling from Langkawi so we planned a two day visit. We stayed at Amari. Located in the heart of the city, it had all the amenities of a 5 Star Hotel. The rooms were excellent. My kid loved chilling out in the kids pool after a long day at Legoland. The kids menu kept her satisfied. Overall had a great stay so will surely recommend it. The only drawback is that it was a good half an hour drive to Legoland. However Grab Cars are easily available and travelling to and fro did not pose us any problem.

Legoland Resort

In case you want to skip the travelling part then stay at Legoland Resort which is just opposite the park. The hotel too is built on Lego theme which will surely entice the kids. Check out the details here.
