Go Island Hopping in Langkawi

One of the main attraction in any archipelago is their Island Hopping Tour. Since Langkawi consists of 99 islands Island Hopping is very popular in Langkawi. Apart from the beautiful locales, this tour also lets you explore water activities like kayaking, snorkeling, paddle boating and swimming in the sea as well as in fresh water lakes. This day long tour takes you to some of the stunning island in the south of the mainland. Read further to know more about what to expect when you Go Island Hopping in Langkawi.

The Islands

Pulau Delang Bunting or the Lake of the Pregnant Maiden

Pregnant Maiden Island Langkawi

This is the first island on the tour. You reach this after a pleasantly windy 20 minutes boat ride. Before reaching the island, the guide will show you the outline of the mountains that resemble the shape of a pregnant lady lying down on her back. Hence the name Lake of the Pregnant Maiden.

Here, the stunning fresh water lake is surrounded by thick foliage. The lake is where all the action takes place. According to some legend, a woman can get pregnant by drinking water from this lake. I didn’t try it, but if you are game for it do so at your own risks.

Once you disembark from the boat, you will see shops selling coconut water and some eatables. Next there is a ticket counter selling tickets for Paddle Boating and Kayaking. In case you are not up for it you can also just swim or laze along the wooden jetty enjoying the scenic lake.

Travel Tip #1

The climb to reach the lake involves a steep flight of stairs and will take you 10-12 minutes one way. Boating and Kayaking lasts for about 40 minutes after which you can walk back to the boat. So make sure you reach the boat at the scheduled time to avoid being stranded on the island. The people on the island will arrange for another boat ride for you but this will involve high charges and lots of haggling. So its better to be on time.

Travel Tip #2

There are paid washrooms and changing rooms only this island in the entire tour. So make full use of it.

Pulau Singa Besar or Big Lion Island

This is where you get to experience Live Eagle Feeding. You do not alight here but stay in the boat itself. Once you reach this spot, they kill the boat engine and start throwing bits and pieces of chicken in the water and in no time a flock of eagles will swarm in, pick up the food and disappear in the trees. At any point of time there are around 20-30 white bellied eagles and Brahminy Kites visible. The eagles do not nest here but come here only for feeding. Mornings usually have much more number of eagles. The show lasts for around 20 minutes. After which you sail to your next destination.

The island surrounding this place used to be inhabited once but now it is outgrown by nature.

Beras Basah or Wet Rice Island

Beras Basah is the last stop on the tour. This is where you can relax and rejuvenate in the soft white sand enjoying the cool sea breeze. The beach here is beautiful with clear waters. Its perfect for snorkeling as it is rich in corals. Usually there are shops selling swimming gears on hire. However when we visited during the month of Ramadan, here were no water activities. However, we did enjoy splashing around and swimming. You get to spend 1 hour here after which you head back to the Teluk Baru Jetty.

Travel Tip #3

There are shops selling coconut water and eatables here but be aware of the monkeys who are always in the lookout to snatch away anything that is unattended.

Travel Tip #4

There are no washrooms or changing rooms here so wear your swimwear underneath. I tried changing my kids swimwear behind some palm trees but the number of huge red ants around scared her away.

How to Book the Tour

Mangrove Tour Langkawi

The boat has a capacity of 8-10 people so if you are a group of 8 you can book an individual boat. This way the tour cost will come down significantly. You can book the tickets from any travel agent in Langkawi. While doing so be prepared to pay a little more as their commission. You can also book directly at the Teluk Baru jetty.  But since it is the most sought after tour in Langkawi, the tickets depend on availability. Or else you can do what we did, Book it Online at a discounted rate.

Travel Tip #5

We booked our discounted Island hopping tour which also included hotel pick-up and drop. The driver was friendly and even contacted us via Whatssapp to give us a heads up on the pick up time which helped us in planning our time accordingly.

What to Expect on this Tour

This is a four hour tour that takes you on a speedboat to the islands on the South of Langkawi. The tour starts from Teluk Baru jetty. Most of the Tour operators offer free pick up and drop to the hotel you are staying at. There are two timings of this tour; first one at 9 am and the second one at 3 pm.

What to Wear and Carry

Since you will be out in the fiery sun all day long a good sunscreen along with a hat and sunglasses are a must. Wear clothes with breathable material. Carry your swimwear and change of clothes along.

Some tour operators do provide with water but make sure you carry yours too along with some snacks. There are some retail outlets selling limited stuff at higher rates. But the coconut water is refreshing and cooling in the sweltering heat.

Where to Stay in Langkawi

Langkawi is a popular tourist destination so there is no dearth of staying options. We stayed at the Berjaya Resort which was walking distance from Oriental Village. This provided amazing views of the mountains from their private beach. There are many room types to choose from and we chose the Rainforest Challet. The cottages with beautifully built will all amenities in the midst of green foliage. The two pools and pristine beach kept my water baby happy. The four restaurants gave us ample of food options to choose from.

  1. It sounds so fun to do an island tour – I can’t believe there are so many. Even though the monkeys might steal your food it would be really cool to see wild monkeys! The water looks beautiful and this seems like a great way to see the most of Langkawi.

  2. Monkeys are funny as they like to steal things from tourists and then mimicking what they are doing. So it’s really funny to see them. Nice place to go.

  3. So many people rave about Langkawi. I think I’d prefer the destination with the soft sand and clear waters. But I’m not sure about the ants. I had my feet covered in them in the Philippines and that was the most painful experience. The resort looks lovely.

  4. Oh wow, this looks like such a great fun! I have been island hopping in Greece and that was wonderful. I can only imagine how interesting it is at Langkawi. Love the resort!

What a great day out for family and all travellers. This is the first time that I have heard about island hopping in Langkawi and it is something I would like to experience when I visit. I laughed at your comment about the cheeky monkeys ready to steal your things – they are really so naughty these days.

  6. It must be so incredible to see the eagles feeding, and so many at one time and place! I think I would really enjoy seeing their agility first hand.

I also loved hearing about the Lake of the Pregnant Maiden. It’s easy to see how that name came to be. As someone who loves ascribing meaningful shapes to clouds and other things in nature, I can truly appreciate this!

Looks like a wonderful tour; I hope to visit one day.

  7. I would love to visit the different islands around Langkawi and what a great way to spend your vacation. The island comes with its fair share of adventures I must admit like the monkeys trying to steal your belongings. It all makes great memories. I live the beaches and as I prefer sandy they make the perfect holiday destination for me and my family I must say. Overall a great experience and some great visuals to add to it. Thanks for sharing.

  8. Now that is an interesting addition to Langkawi. For me this place was always about scuba diving and water activities but did not realize they have island hopping too. Am all for this tour, minus the monkeys of course. However, I guess there is no avoiding them.

  9. I love island hopping. I am sure when in Langkawi, I am surely visiting the Big Lion island, The Lake of the Pregnant Maiden with the weirdest belief of being pregnant drinking the water of the lake, and the Wet Rice island. On top of these, I am surely going to enjoy kayaking.
